Someone was hit by a car on North Eagleville Road in January 2024 near the Storrs campus of the University of Connecticut (UConn). Both people were UConn students.
The victim’s identity remains undisclosed; however, Omar Majdoub, a 22-year-old motorist from Newington, was named as the culprit. Majdoub was detained at the scene after failing multiple field sobriety tests, according to UConn police.
In addition to second-degree assault, he is accused of failing to yield to a pedestrian crossing and driving under the influence (DUI). The student’s injuries required airlifting to Hartford Hospital, but a full recovery is anticipated.
UConn has put in place a number of safety steps to make campus safer and healthier:
All visitors must wear masks or face coverings while on campus and pre-registration is mandatory for access. Health protocols include monitoring health, hand hygiene, and physical distancing.
UConn’s Division of University Safety oversees programs such as police, fire, emergency management, and environmental health & safety.
During adverse weather conditions, community members should evaluate circumstances, plan extra commute time, and take common-sense precautions.
It is critical to remember that campus safety needs a collaborative effort, and each individual is responsible for contributing to the maintenance of a safe environment.
The UConn community mourns the loss of a talented student after a tragic incident in the parking garage. We extend our condolences to the loved ones of the UConn student who has passed away.
