Sonya Masse, 36 years old, was a warm and lovely Black lady, but unfortunately she was killed by a deputy in her own house. The events that killed Sonya Masse began around 1:20 AM on July 6, 2024. She called the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office to say that someone might have been breaking into her Springfield, Illinois, home. As deputies Sean Grayson and the other officer entered her home, they stated that they checked the exterior of her house and did not see any bizarre activity. However, tensions had already grown at that point after Sonya walked away from the table to attend to a pot of water boiling on the stove.
Sonya sadly died from a gunshot wound to the head after Deputy Grayson shot her. Released by the Illinois State Police, the body camera video captured the times before the incident. According to the video, Sonya’s approaching her stove caused the scenario to become heated and Deputy Grayson shot his pistol. Two weeks later, Deputy Sean Grayson who shot Sonya Masse was fired from the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office after it was revealed that the shooting was not an accident. He faced several charges including first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, and official misconduct among other charges. These were the charges that Grayson faced but he never admitted to any of them and was incarcerated with no opportunity for release on bail.
A judge ruled against his request for release until the trial.
