What are Natural Ways to Reduce High Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a waxy-fatty substance found in every cell of the blood. It is really necessary for performing some bodily functions such as building healthy cells, vitamin D, and producing certain hormones in the body. However, excess cholesterol can lead to some health problems, mainly related to heart diseases.

High cholesterol levels mean the presence of excess fatty substances in blood vessels. Eventually, these deposits grow, making it very difficult for enough blood to flow through the arteries. Sometimes, these deposits break suddenly, thus leading to the buildup of plaque or clots in the arteries. This can raise the risk of stroke and other cardiovascular problems.

To treat such threatening diseases, it is really necessary to switch one’s poor lifestyle with a healthy way of living – that’s what Ayurveda guides us. In addition to it, Ayurveda also provides Ayurvedic treatments for high cholesterol that are all herbs-based. These herbs are highly effective at boosting the body’s natural healing capability and immune system.

What are the Types of Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is categorized into further types based on its structure and function in the body. According to current studies and medical understanding, the main types of cholesterol are:

  • Low-density lipoprotein (LDL):

It is usually referred to as ‘bad cholesterol’. The main function of LDL is to carry cholesterol from the liver to the cells. However, if the amount of LDL circulating in the blood is too high, it can lead to the development of fatty deposits in the arteries. This can become a major cause of some serious health concerns, as stated above.

  • High-density lipoprotein (HDL):

In contrast to LDL, HDL is known as ‘good cholesterol’. It is because it helps remove excess LDL from the bloodstream. That is, it carries cholesterol away from cells and back to the liver where it is either broken down or passed out of the body as waste. High levels of HDL are associated with a lower risk of heart disease.

  • Very Low-density lipoprotein (VLDL):

VLDL primarily carries triglycerides (another type of fat) from the liver to the tissues in the body. Where, either it will be stored or used for energy. Although similar to LDL, high levels of VLDL can contribute to the buildup of plaque in the arteries.

Natural ways to reduce

Reducing high cholesterol naturally or through Ayurveda can be an effective and beneficial decision. These methods mainly focus on using organic ingredients, lifestyle changes, and practices that improve one’s overall health and lower levels.

While natural methods can provide effective results, an individual needs to consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner before making any significant changes.

Herbal remedies for Cholesterol reduction

Some herbs are recommended for cholesterol patients, as they infuse the properties that help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol and improve overall heart health. Here’s the list of main herbs known for their lowering benefits:

  • Garlic

It is one of the most well-known home remedies for high cholesterol. It contains allicin which has been shown to reduce the bad cholesterol and total levels in the body. Consuming fresh garlic can also help individuals to maintain better heart health.

  • Turmeric

Turmeric, with its active ingredient curcumin, has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Curcumin helps in reducing LDL cholesterol and preventing the oxidation of cholesterol. This helps with the prevention of plaque formation in the arteries.

  • Fenugreek

Its seeds are rich in soluble fiber, which can help reduce the absorption of cholesterol in the intestines. Its regular consumption will gradually lower LDL and triglycerides.

  • Red yeast rice

Red yeast rice can be indicated as one of the best Ayurvedic medicines for cholesterol, as it contains monacolin K compound similar to the active ingredient in some-lowering medications. It is an effective remedy that improves heart health.
