2021 has been a wild year for all of us, but what’s wilder is the fashion industry trends. On this occasion we aren’t talking about just any fashion, we are talking about lingerie. Fresh attitudes about what defines the best lingerie have changed over the past few months leading to emerging trends.

 

It could be due to the fact we have been in and out of lockdowns and become accustomed to working from home but it seems everyone just can’t get enough of comfy lingerie right now. This article is going to talk you through the history of the bra up to the modern consumer day trends of 2021. 

The Evolution Of The Bra

According to google arts and culture, the origins of the bra date back more than 1500 years ago. During the renaissance era, corsets were made to mould women’s bodies to fit the male gaze by emphasizing a narrow waist and confining women. Throughout the second half of the 19th century, an hourglass silhouette dominated fashion with corsets styled with breast support as well as constricting the waist.By the 1920s however, the bras had evolved again, bearing little resemblance to the supporting corset-style worn earlier in the century. The fashion during this era focused on a slimmer build taking any emphasis away from the breasts. The most common style in this era was a bandeau, which was easy to mass-produce and even made easily by women at home. This has taken over the previously trending bandeau and handkerchief-style crop tops. Another lingerie fashion statement that has become increasingly popular is the silk slip dress. What was once an undergarment that remained strictly in the bedroom has become a staple outfit for many. With some alterations, the satin slip dress has become a summer dress alternative and even worn on a night out by many. It seems clear that many women have taken a u-turn in their attitudes towards lingerie, with a fresh outlook and will to wear whatever they want. In the past neutral nude colors have been the go-to, but with so many colors trending at the moment such as sage green, many consumers wanted lingerie to match.
