For his secondary education, he went to Gloucester Catholic High School, New Jersey. Afterwards, he transferred to Dubuque Senior High School in Iowa, where he was with the Dubuque Fighting Saints in the USHL (United States Hockey League). He had a stint with the Fighting Saints during the 2010–2011 season, scoring 36 goals and 36 assists, helping clinch the Clark Cup for the team. His team was declared USHL champions.
Johnny Gaudreau signed on with Boston College until 2014, after he graduated from high school. He played outstandingly his freshman year and managed to bag 21 goals along with 23 assists, which made him the top scorer amongst other freshmen.
This also enabled Boston United to claim the national championship. Come junior year, Johnny Gaudreau earned the coveted Hobey Baker Award for being the best college hockey player in 2014 after managing to score 36 goals and 44 assists in 40 games.
Johnny was chosen as a fourth-round pick in the NHL Entry Draft 2011 by the Calgary Flames. He managed to score a goal in his debut match in the league against the Flames on 13th April 2014. Over the nine seasons spent with the Flames, he accumulated a total of six All-Star selections. In the 2021-2022 season, he managed to score 40 goals and give 75 assists, amounting to a total of 115 points earned in the entire season.
In July 2022, he signed a seven-year contract worth $68.25 million with the Columbus Blue Jackets. During his two-year stint, he played an integral part in making sure that the team topped the charts in terms of points scored.

On August 29, 2024, Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew were riding their bicycles in Oldmans Township, New Jersey. In doing so, he hit Johnny and Matthew from behind, leading to their tragic deaths at the scene.
The Gaudreau brothers were in town for their sister Katie’s wedding, which was planned for the next day. This heartbreaking event deeply affected their family and the wider community.
