House Speaker Mike Johnson’s Chief of Staff Arrested for DUI After Trump’s Congressional Address

Hayden Haynes, the chief of staff to House Speaker Mike Johnson, was arrested late Tuesday night on suspicion of driving under the influence after his vehicle collided with a parked Capitol Police car. The incident occurred around 11:40 p.m., shortly after President Donald Trump addressed a joint session of Congress, during which Johnson sat directly behind the president.

U.S. Capitol Police reported that Hayden Haynes backed into the unoccupied police vehicle near the Capitol. He was subsequently arrested and later released with a citation to appear in court.

Speaker Mike Johnson, who has worked closely with Haynes for nearly a decade, expressed his continued support for his top aide. Johnson said he has “full faith and confidence” in Hayden Haynes to run the Speaker’s office, citing the fact that both members and staff highly regard him.

Since 2017, Hayden Haynes has been Johnson’s chief of staff. He kept the job when Johnson became Speaker in October 2023. A former Republican senator from Louisiana named David Vitter hired Haynes for several different jobs from 2009 to 2016. Before working for Johnson, Hayden Haynes worked for Vitter.
