Flash Flooding Hits Dolly Parton’s Dollywood, Prompting Evacuations and Road Closures

Severe weather struck Sevier County, Tennessee, on July 28, 2024, leading to flash flooding in multiple areas, including the renowned Dollywood theme park. The popular destination, owned by country music icon Dolly Parton, was forced to close early as a result of the extreme conditions, with guests evacuated from rides and buildings for their safety.

The flooding was triggered by intense rainfall that inundated the region. According to the National Weather Service, Sevier County experienced “a slow-moving thunderstorm produced very heavy rainfall rates of 1-2 inches in 30 minutes.” This rapid accumulation of water led to the flash flood, causing the Pigeon River, which runs through Dollywood, to overflow its banks.

Dramatic scenes unfolded as the floodwaters rushed through the park. Videos and images shared on social media showed swollen rivers, inundated roads, and water gushing through the theme park’s attractions. Several roads leading to and within the park became impassable, including the main entrance road, which collapsed due to the force of the floodwaters.

Emergency services sprang into action, responding to numerous calls for assistance. The Pigeon Forge Fire Department reported that they had to perform several water rescues and urged residents and visitors to avoid flooded areas. One injury was reported as a result of the flooding, although the extent of the injuries is not yet known.

In a statement, Dollywood acknowledged the incident, saying, “Due to severe weather in the area, Dollywood experienced localized flooding in a few areas of the park. The safety of our guests and employees is our top priority, and we are working to ensure their well-being.” The park remained closed on July 29 for cleanup and repairs, with a reopening date to be determined.

The flooding at Dollywood was part of a broader weather system that caused widespread disruption across the county. Several areas in Sevier County experienced flash flooding, road closures, and property damage. The American Red Cross set up a shelter for those affected by the floods, and local authorities urged residents to exercise caution and be prepared for potential power outages and additional flooding.

As the cleanup and recovery efforts get underway, the resilience of the community is evident. Dolly Parton herself has not yet publicly commented on the incident, but her presence and support for the region are expected to play a pivotal role in the recovery process. Officials advise residents and visitors to stay informed, follow safety guidelines, and be prepared for potential changes in weather conditions.

The flash flood at Dollywood serves as a stark reminder of the power and unpredictability of nature and the importance of preparedness and swift emergency response. As the impacted areas begin their journey towards recovery, the thoughts of many are with those affected, grateful that the consequences were not more severe.
