The 97th Academy Awards, held on Sunday, 2025, and Anora won five Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director for Sean Baker, and Best Actress for Mikey Madison. It was a great night.
The event, which was led for the first time by the charming Conan O’Brien, recognized great movies and brought attention to the problems caused by the earlier this year’s terrible wildfires in Los Angeles.
The Academy Awards Oscar winners showcased an array of talented artists and filmmakers who made a significant impact on the industry.
A moving tribute to Los Angeles was shown at the start of the event, along with clips from famous movies that showed how important the city is to the movie business. After, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, who are both in Wicked, put on a beautiful music show that set a strong and emotional tone for the rest of the night.
The Academy made sure that the Oscars would always be a big celebration of filmmaking, even though the award season plan was changed and the yearly finalists’ dinner was canceled.
With 13 nominations, Netflix’s musical/crime story Emilia Pérez had the most of the night’s top contenders. Wicked and The Brutalist each got 10 awards. Emilia Pérez won a lot of awards, including Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña and Best Original Song for El Mal. But Anora, with five wins, took home the most awards of the night, making it the most prestigious movie of the year.
Adrien Brody won the Oscar for Best Actor for his powerful part in The Brutalist. Kieran Culkin won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his work in A Real Pain. Other big wins were for Wicked in the categories of Best Production Design and Best Costume Design, and for Dune: Part Two in the categories of Best Visual Effects and Best Sound.
Sean Baker’s win as Best Director made it even more clear that he is one of the most interesting directors of our time. Anora was a hit because of its unique story and Madison’s captivating performance, which touched both viewers and critics deeply.
In the foreign category, I’m Still Here from Brazil won Best foreign Feature. This was a big moment for Latin American movies. Flow beat out strong contenders like Inside Out 2 and The Wild Robot to win Best Animated Feature.
The script awards went to Anora for Best Original script and Conclave for Best Adapted Screenplay. These wins showed that the Academy likes stories that are interesting and push the limits of what is possible in writing.
The movie document No Other Land won the award for Best Documentary Feature, and The Substance won for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. I’m Not a Robot won the award for Best Live Action Short, and In the Shadow of the Cypress got the award for Best Animated Short.
